Here at Penny on the Move, we celebrated International Women’s Day 2026 with the theme ‘Give To Gain’ through our social media messaging.
‘Give To Gain’ emphasizes the power of reciprocity and support. When people, organisations, and communities give generously, opportunities and support for everyone increases. Giving is not a subtraction, it’s intentional multiplication. When women thrive, we all rise, that’s why at Penny on the Move, with the help of our teams, we want to do everything we can to support and advance women and girls within the wider team.
By focusing on these four women working within the business, we highlight them as powerful examples of generosity and collaboration in practice. Through sharing best practice, offering training and support, exchanging knowledge, and giving their time through advocacy, education, visibility, and mentoring, they demonstrate a clear belief that by working together we are all stronger. We are proud that they bring this approach to their work within our organisation and to the betterment of the business as a whole. Here are their comments:
Emma Shell – Head of Compliance & Business Development
“It is challenging sometimes to be a women in a position like this, which is in a predominantly male dominated industry, but my work within Penny has always made me feel equal to my colleagues and that’s so important.
This is actually my 18th year with Penny and I’ve worked in every area of the business. I started as a cashier in the first site and I’m really proud of the journey I’ve been on. I’m also really proud that I have colleagues that reach out to me at different levels of the business as they aspire to try and progress through the business and really become leaders within this industry. It means a great deal to me that I’m able to provide that to the company.
To have Vicky Hennessy as our CEO, that’s just brilliant, and it’s a real honour to work alongside her. It’s brilliant to watch her journey and it’s just fantastic that Penny on the Move is so committed to bringing women through this leadership programme. They are so supportive of that and its never ever felt like it’s been a challenge being a women in this industry.”
Natalie Carroll – Area Leader, North West
“Being a woman in the fuel industry can involve navigating stereotypes and underrepresentation, but it also offers opportunities to lead change, stand out professionally, and help shape a more inclusive future in the sector.
Penny on the Move is a diverse employer with many strong, empowered women across the organisation. These individuals serve as excellent role models within the business, inspiring and supporting the progression of future female leaders.”

Carla Kelly – Area Leader, South
“Over the years in a field role I’ve faced a number of challenges including sexual harassment, feeling ignored and disrespected. In a previous role, I had to overcome many obstacles to deliver my role to my full potential due to underhanded comments and barriers put up by male stakeholders/colleagues working under my lead.
My confidence has grown dramatically through overcoming difficult situations and has only made me a stronger person. I am the only female Area Manager on the region for Penny, however, I feel valued and listened to. My peers have always respected and looked out for me.
With a positive mindset you can overcome anything, don’t ever feel undervalued for being a woman! Know your worth!”
Angela Schoneville – Area Leader, Scotland West
“On one hand, it’s incredibly rewarding. The industry is fast-paced, operationally focused, and commercially driven. Delivering results, leading teams, and making strategic decisions in that environment builds resilience and confidence. When you succeed, you know it’s because of your capability, not because anything was handed to you.
There’s a real sense of pride in carving out your space and proving that leadership has nothing to do with gender. It’s not without its challenges, but it’s also incredibly rewarding — especially when you see progress.”
